Maroons' loss to Archers limits chance for final four

(published on August 15, 2008 in Philippine Collegian)
by Richard Jacob Dy
...
After suffering its seventh loss, the UP Fighting Maroons is holding on to dear life and will have to win its five remaining games to cop a slot in the final four of the UAAP basketball tournament.
....

The Maroons endured its second defeat to the De La Salle Green Archers in the second round of the games on August 10 at the PhilSports Arena.

...

In the first three minutes of the UP-La Salle game, big man Magi Sison gave an impressive swat on an Archer attempting a facial shot. Four minutes gone, the bout resumed after timeout with back-to-back two-point shots by guard Martin Reyes for UP's early lead 7-5. Less than a minute left, however, the Archers ran a good defense and shot nonstop drops to own the quarter with a 12-point lead. Sison finished the period with a buzzer-beater, 9-19.

...

Following a poor starter, the Maroons gained momentum in the second quarter with Kevin Astorga's consecutive two-point drives to basket. Forward Woodward Co and Reyes attempted to sustain the force but fell short with two missed shots. A three-pointer by Reyes impressively cut the lead to four ending the second half with a close 30-34.

...

Reyes and guard Arvin Braganza worked impressive shots in the first three minutes of the third canto, but the Archers retaliated with more rebounds and a better defense, widening its lead to 9 points. Around five minutes remaining, Reyes scored a three-pointer to bring the scores to 38-45. Yet again, the Archers' counter-offensive three point shots matched Maroon guard Paul Sorongon's and team captain Jay Agabayani's two-point knockdowns to slam the period, 59-48.

...

The last quarter saw Sorongon missing a lay-up midway and mishandling the ball outside the court twice during the period, limiting the chance for the Maroons to redeem itself. The team relied much on Reyes' two three-point shots for the last three minutes. The Maroons, however, missed another drop and the Archers shot an off-the-backboard for the last-minute play to end the game, 61-81.

...

"We are the youngest team. [But] after a year, we are going to be a really tough team. We just have to continue getting better," said Coach Aboy Castro of the team's loss, adding that winning the last five games may still give them an elusive final-four slot..

...

For their remaining games, the UP ballers are up against veteran teams from the University of the East, AdamsonUniversity, Ateneo De Manila University, Far Eastern University, and University of Santo Tomas.

...

The Maroons suffered an earlier defeat in the August 7 game with the National University (NU) Bulldogs, 59-72.

Chancy selection for three campuses underway

(published on August 7, 2008 in Philippine Collegian)
by: Richard Jacob Dy

Issues on representation and transparency in the process yet again hound the ongoing search for the next chancellors of UP units in Visayas (UPV), Los Banos (UPLB), and Manila (UPM).

Mae Therese Anglopez, University Student Council (USC) chair of UPV, said the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and Tacloban College were unable to participate in the nomination for the members of the unit's search committee (SC).

Anglopez said the memo calling for nominations to the SC was ignored by former dean Ebonia Seraspe. "All colleges from Tacloban to Miagao were informed of the nomination. But CAS student council did not even know about it until last July 28 after all SC seats were taken," she added.

Seraspe could not be reached as of press time.

Dr. Erlinda Palaganas, national president of the All-UP Academic Employees Union (AUPAEU), also said SC reports should be made available to the public. "Search committee reports are no exemption to the democratic process and transparency valued in the university," she said.

Currently, SC reports are submitted only to UP President Emerlinda Roman, who will then recommend a nominee to the Board of Reagents (BOR).

Leo Fuentes, UPLB-USC chair, meanwhile, said the next chancellor should look at education as a right, and uphold the democratic rights of students by conducting consultations when implementing new policies.

The deadline for nominations is set on August 12, after which a series of interviews and consultations with the nominees will be held until September 5. Roman will endorse a nominee in the BOR meeting on September 29.

"The challenge for the committees is to conduct as much as possible comprehensive consultations (with) all constituents and colleges. Active participation of [all] constituents is necessary," says Student Regent Shahana Abdulwahid.

There are no nominees yet in the three units as of press time.

July 17, 2008 Article: CAL-SC, Kalasag, wala pa ring permanenteng tanggapan

(published on July 17, 2008 in Philippine Collegian)
by: Richard Jacob Dy

Dagdag ni Nolasco, "It only bespeaks of how Dean Almario gives importance, or lack thereof, to the CAL-SC and Kalasag, two autonomous student institutions that have a mandate from the students."

Welcome UP Freshies

It is June, the month that marked the start of our intellectual arrogance. They’ll teach you a lot of humbling things in this humble dwelling like “There are only two universities in our country, UP and others.” and logics like “You think, therefore you are from UP.”

I am an Iskolar ng Bayan. I got through the most difficult admission in the country. I am one of those who are qualified to be in UP among thousands of hopeful applicants. But don’t be ahead of yourself because when you start to get failing grades, slap your face. Being admitted to UP doesn’t bestow you any bragging rights, especially when you haven’t proven anything yet.

These are the things I took in before I entered this university. Being in UP doesn’t make me more human than any other students. And my High-school achievements don’t really count. Not because almost everyone in UP are class Valedictorians but because in college, you start from nothing and all you have is your hard work and that would determine your fate.

I had lowered my expectations. I thought that I’m going to transfer anyway so why bother make a life here. Then these people came. Co-freshies, co-suck ups, train mates, eat mates, videoke mates, classmates. I personally call them blockmates. But who doesn’t? Be with them because they will help you no matter who they are and what happens.

Some blockmates are there for essential reasons, e.g. help you with your geographic illness. Some blockmates irritate you to the max. Some are reserved. Some are extroverts. Some doesn’t like your company. Some likes to be with you. And some of these people don’t have the choice but to be with you. But at the end of the day, these “some” will become your friends.

I am sanctimonious. I am intelligent and I am a product of higher evolution. I am the only one in this country who is not apathetic. If you become one of these then you became the monster our forefathers, heroes, and noble Filipinos vowed to destroy. Don’t let ideologies gulp you down. Become confident but not arrogant. Become critical but not holier-than-thou. Become a genuine Iskolar ng Bayan, and that is to give back in your own little way to the Filipino taxpayers or citizens who helped you with your education. In other words, serve them and don't leave this country immediately.

Rants

Why the sudden 'out of stock' now? Why now that the prices of diesel, gas, and gasoline are still not up till midnight? Even if there are delays on the deliveries, as what they reason out, having more than one gasoline station to tell this lame reason is questionable enough. Hoarding! Hoarding! Hoarding!

Why is Nan still on PBB? I can't even feel his presence. Who even votes for him? Is there really a need to put a charity housemate in every season just to cover up that PBB is apparently a resounding talent search! At ngayong nawala na si Rona (Pinagtapat pa kasi sila ni Robi eh they are both vying for the big win!), all of them except Robi and Alex don't even deserve the last slot in the big four.
...
Why do I really suck in Math? A little logical-mathematical intelligence would help me survive UP but I really think I have none. Even if I studied all night-long for two straight days, I still failed my last exam. I guess the law of sowing and reaping isn't really universal.
...
Why can't Gloria just resign? She's been struggling, panting, and longing for legitimacy for years now. I personally pity her especially now that the unfelt strong economy she usually brags visibly goes downhill. I can't stop my headache whenever I see her very large tarpaulins with tags like 'Labanan ang Kahirapan.'
...
Why do I keep on ranting when I could do something about these? I could be an advocate of alternative energy resources, but I would end up to be called mentally ill by authorities just to maintain the status quo. I could have studied for one more day to pass my last exam, but studying isn't just a student's responsibility and I have a life. Besides, I really think I studied enough to pass. I could have voted for Rona a thousand times, but I also believe Robi deserves to stay. I could have.. wait, Gloria's hopeless.
...
But you see, I could have done these things and there will always be a way where there seems to be no way. All you need is strong faith with right motivation but I have none in the moment. I hope tomorrow's better.
